Roses Watercolor

I have not given this a title yet but wanted to get it up for you. This is a full sheet in size so it is pretty good sized and took awhile to do. I think it was a struggle to save the glow when I was going so dark in the shadows but I hope that it still glows! Any suggestions for titles are welcome!

Thought I would add the drawing I did for my book that was part of this series of studies. It is entitled Study of Sunset Seduction.

Lean On Me

Well the more I looked at this painting below I felt I needed to change that area on the left behind the fence as it was now an entirely different painting once that heavy fence went in...the airy quality there was totally different from the heaviness of the rest. At first what I tried was awful...and I had to scrub...which I hate to do but had to save this. I think it is ok but if only I had had thought this through I would not have had this problem...therefore...do as I say, not as I do! ha! Always know your background before you start a painting. I always do but then I will change my mind and make things up and as you can see I can nearly wreck things...I need to put a very large sign up above my studio table that says...WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? DON'T CHANGE YOUR MIND! Ha!!! I went in and redid some edges as well on the peony along the dark side of the fence and other areas...I bet I could spend two more days adjusting things but have decided to instead start something new and I turned this against the wall...I cant look at it or I will tinker with it again!!! I will head to the printers that is 3 hours away sometime next week and get this scanned so giclees can be made and cards.

White Peony Completed

I cannot get a very accurate picture as we are having a blizzard but thought I would post this anyway. It is close. I want to be done with this as I have already begun my next painting and I am so anxious to get going on it! I will have to wait until tomorrow but in the mean time I can clean up the studio and be ready to go!

I darkened the sky in the very last because to do it any sooner I might have gone too far. Darks of course are such great contrast but I am always looking for another answer...it is easy to go dark but I wanted a composition back there. I still might do something with the left upper area but decided to wait and think on it. I hope that I can call it done and move on but in reality there is so much I could tinker with and adjust I could be on this another week!! So for now I am calling it done and the title is going to be Lean On Me I think. It was a title suggested to me and I think it is a very good one!

White Peony Demo Continuted

I am a little further...but not as far as I had hoped. Life just keeps getting in the way and so paintings do not get done like they should...but that is just how things are for me right now.

I started the fence and decided to go quite dark with it for contrast but that is going to require alot of adjusting with the values in the peony. I do not think that will be hard however but have decided I need to get the leaves figured out and in so that I have all the other values to look at to make my final decisions on the peony. Each time I wash over the browns in the fence they fade out as transparents will do so then I have to go back in and add some details again so it is taking a little longer but I always enjoy this back and forth play with the painting. I hope after tomorrow I am working on the peony and bringing this one to a close!

Another White Peony!

I started working on another white peony and before Christmas had it blocked in as you will see in the first picture and then finally did some thinking on it and today I added the beginnings of a split rail fence. I am hoping this will work out but means I have to darken all the values again in the peony. The grays are the ones I always make from my triad of Quin Rose, Indanthorne Blue and New Gamboge. The fence is an attempt to split the background into a Golden Mean of thirds to see if I can add interest and hold the eye in that upper third on the right. I should learn photoshop and not experiment with a painting I really like but it is what I do...ha!!

Finished Stargazer Lily Watercolor

Here is the end results for my painting that I stretched over stretcher bars. I have seen this with so many of my friends and I just never tried it but decided to give it a try and enjoyed it alot! The size is 8" x 8" and watercolor that is spray sealed and then varnished. It now can be floated in a frame or hung as it is but never will need glass to protect it. I will do a few more this way as it will be interesting to see if these will sell better. I have not used a Paypal button on here for a long time but am thinking of trying it again...I will let you know if I work up the courage to do that! ha!!

I need to keep going with the Give Thanks demo for you!

I am not sure I have discussed the stem! I decided to make it longer and go behind the gourd. I felt like that edge was my brightest edge and I was beginning to lose it. Not sure if there was wisdom in that decision or not but it was what I did and why at the time. I have darkened more in the leaves and am finishing off the lettering and have placed a pale blue wash in for the background. This is why I suggest you know your background. I am going into this with the strong chance now of wrecking what I have because I have no idea what it will look like. After I put the design into the curtain, I decided that perhaps I had too much going on as it was. Plus I knew I had to finish this up for the deadline so there really was not time to sit and ponder what to do. I know next I have to begin working on the Blue Jay and get his values in there and then I can make up my mind on the rest. I sure wish all the elements would have been clarified in the beginning as I think this could have been a really interesting painting. It still is nice but predictable in many ways.

Stretched Watercolor Paper

I have never taken the time to experiment but this winter I hope to do more of that. Right now I am working on this little piece. It is 8" x 8" and I stretched wet watercolor paper over stretcher bars and stapled it to the back and I am painting the sides. Hopefully when I am done I can get better pictures to show you that part. When I am done I shall varnish it and it will not require glass. If all goes well I might even finish it tomorrow...but don't hold your breath! Ha! I see it is coming up a little dark but the sun is going down here and so it is not the best. It also is not square but I will do better the next time!

Next Step in Watercolor of Give Thanks

I am hoping I numbered these right so that this is the next step! While I am doing this posting I am working on a new peony painting but with grey skies it has been impossible to take pictures. This often happens to me in the winter so we might not have a step by step on that one.
In this step you can see I began to solve the background. Remember I do not like to leave this up in the air and make mistakes. If I knew photoshop I could check this out there but I just have to rely on my instinct at this point. I would much rather have taken it in a photo to see if it was working but instead I am taking a terrible chance and hoping it will look ok. These are curtains I have in my studio so I just drew them from life and waited for the time of day that I took this picture to try to make the shadows be right. It is here that I lost my beautiful peanut. I did not realize that the dark area would run behind it and there was some erasing there or something as the edge bled over and it just was gone. It took work to get it back so that it was a nice peanut but not the beautiful one I originally had. I am still very unsure of the background here as to what to do next and the deadline is looming...stay tuned! ha!

Step Four of Watercolor Thanks Giving

Sorry guys...crzay world but I am back! So here is the fourth picture of took of the progression of Give Thanks. Here I began working on the Blue Jay and the peanut and I really nailed the peanut...not sure if in this one or the next step but I was so dang happy with it but then went on to lose it when the background went in. That is the problem when you are unsure what is going to go in the background. It is always best if you can plan that ahead because tossing one together is never the best solution. On that note, I know many of you know that I do not see a dark background as a solution...it is an easy way to get drama but for me I always want to know if there is something else I could do. Yes, there are times I have sacrificed the painting trying out something different but I just see too many artists going with a solid dark background because they know it will work...when I know something else would as well but they are not willing to go there. I should be smart and just do it myself! ha! Now back to this...I have defined more the letters etc and at this point is when I see that I wish I had added some yellows and greens for leaves. All I had were my red maples with leaves on the ground, everything else had been raked up. But now I see that would have been a very nice balance with the letters. The greens would be a great complement with the orange/reds and would have helped to pop that area,,,however at the time I took the picture I thought it might be nice for that foreground to just blend in and just be a directional tool and one that would ground the area...but greens there would have helped alot. So there you are! Step four! I have a few more steps to go! Hope you are enjoying laughing at my thought process! ha!!!

Demo of Give Thanks Continues!

Been busy around here and forgot to load the next step to my painting! This is step three. I took this quickly as the sun was setting that day thus the strange orange glow on the paper and my cast shadow in the corner!
This painting was sort of being planned as I went because I knew I had to be putting the hours in or I would not meet the deadline. This is the point where I started to realize I wish I had made a few different choices. I will try to remember to mention them on the last one so it makes the most sense. I usually say to my students, know exactly what you are painting or last minute decisions could wreck your painting. Well that is the thin ice I was walking on in this one for sure! ha!

Give Thanks Watercolor Step Two

As you can see I moved right into the lettering. My photo had the red leaves from my Maples here and it looked workable from the photo but the further I got into it I wished I had used some of the yellows. There were not as pretty but now when I see the composition I can see I might have problems...but with a deadline I forged ahead . I think if I had had time I would would have paused at this moment to reconsider the leaves. I also did not have time to consider that background but kept hoping it would come to me as I worked. It did not! ha! But I loved how the dot on the i was helping to hold up this gourd and the letters were so interesting so I hoped it would be enough to help carry this off,. The building up of washes on the gourd were working well too so I felt ok at this point but questioning some things.

Beginning Give Thanks Watercolor

I had just finished the peony painting when Pablo asked if I would be part of the Thanksgiving Challenge. I never find time to do these wonderful things because I am always in the middle of a painting but this time I was totally free! I know those of you that follow me on FB know that I love my pet Blue Jays and I had been thinking I would like time to try to paint one of my friends. So with the challenge I decided one Blue Jay would be in it for sure but had no further ideas. So I went to a friends house who loves to decorate for the seasons and there was this Give Thanks sign on her table and I immediately fell in love with it. I took her large paper gourd that you see and marched home hoping they would work. I set them up on my art table with the afternoon sun coming in and it was magic. I loved the reflection of the word better in some of my other photographs but this combination worked best for placing my bird. I was on this deadline so I just began and had no idea what was going into the background. I had even thought of no background. This is where I began and immediately I was very excited about the words and that lovely gourd! So here you go...my first step..blocking in some color!!!

I loved doing this challenge as Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday! And all of you who follow me on Facebook know how much I love all my pet Blue Jays! So this Blue Jay is giving thanks as well for the peanuts I give him. When I give them their peanuts they often pause and look up at me and I believe they are so happy to receive these gifts. I hope we all will be grateful this season for the gifts we have been given as well.

I intend to begin the step by step on the painting so that you can see what I thought about and the problems I had and what I would have done differently if I had really had the time to think about it! I just had to jump in and do it! ha! But I loved it!

Thank you ever so much Pablo for inviting me and Guy, I loved doing this with you...this was great fun to do it with two friends whom I admire so much!!

Thanksgiving Challenge

I am part of a Thanksgiving challenge and mine is complete but I cannot show you it until we all post together on Nov 23rd. Once I have it posted I will post my steps for you and the troubles I encountered. ha! When have a painted anything without a problem to solve!?? ha! I also am working on several drawings so will be able to begin posting those steps too but first the weather must be agreeable. We have very gray skies and winds...snow...cold...not pleasant for stepping outside to take a picture! So I have to wait for some good weather to do this!
Just wanted you to know I am painting but just have to wait on the finished one for a little longer!

Double Delight Watercolor Peony

I am calling this painting done!!! I am not sure I have captured the best colors for this or not as we are quite overcast here today but I think it is pretty close. It will be awhile before I do all those stamens again! ha! Now to begin drawing the next one! I have so many I want to paint and I have to be selective so that I get the best ones, but I need 10 lifetimes to paint everything I want to paint!

I titled this Double Delight but if you have a better title please let me know in the comments and we can see if one strikes me better than this!

I thought I might get done with this today but no such luck. However!!! I am much closer and so that is such a good feeling. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I just have gotten crosseyed staring at the stamens and just have to stop for the day before I go nuts! ha!! I can study it tonight and start to think how I might bring the background to completion. Hopefully this one will be for sale by next week for sure!!

Double Pink Peony Watercolor

Well today I have been working on the peony painting and am slowly working my way through it. I have so much figuring out still with the stamens on the large peony flower but think for the most part I am done with the smaller one. The background has been an experiement and hope that it will make sense when I am done. I will try to continue working on this through the week and finish it up but there are also some jobs outside yet I have to finish before the first snow hits.

I did manage to get lights up on several trees yesterday so that is good! My goal is to finish this by Friday but don't hold your breathe! ha!! As soon as it is done it will be up for sale and trying to figure out how to do that but perhaps I will put a paypal button up and see if it will sell. Just need to experiment for winter and how I can better use this site. I am thinking about putting up a giclee every week as well for sale and see how that goes!

International Guild of Realism

Back to Painting!

I am back to painting some and even though I feel out of the zone it feels good to be painting at all. I am hoping I will remember the colors I was using and get this one going a little faster so that I can move on to the next one. Some of you might remember that I was drawing 4-5 full sheets for painting this winter so I am hoping to get at them...however a new one has come up that I can hardly wait to paint too so we will see what is next. So here is the peony as it stands tonight. I need to start blocking in the background and spend alot more time on all the stamens to make them stand out. Got a long way to go but it is good to be moving forward!

Fooling Around!

After such a stressful and full summer and fall I began fooling around today after taking some pictures for possible paintings...I became the tree. ha!!! That is a stuffed Puffin I am holding...we call him Laurus! ha!! I started a small painting but with the sudden 80 degree weather for a week I decided I would dig and move plants and get some quack out of areas so that next spring it will be easier...so I am progressing nicely with that as well!

New White Iris

I have been gone so long I feel out of touch! I did manage to nearly complete this white iris while away and yesterday added a few touches. I will get this matted and framed and hung down at Northwoods gallery asap for sale. This is a smaller piece, approx. 8x10 and I believe I will do another small one before going back to the large peony I have been working on as the smaller ones seem to sell fast and Christmas is coming up! ha! This iris grows in my garden and I always love to paint it as I do with most any white flower. I have not officially named it but it might just remain White Iris.

Earlier I told you of the French watercolor magazine I was published in but unable to read as it was all in French. Well their English version has now been published and is on the newstands. Update on Watercolor of Peony

My computer went down and finally is back...but had to buy a new one with windows 7 and now most everything is not compatible and am having trouble with my pictures and adobe photoshop Elements to work on the photos. This is becoming a real test of patience! I am not sure about the colors here...but it is as close as I can get right now. I might have to stop painting now for the next few weeks. I leave Sunday for Oklahoma and have something scheduled every day so it will be hard to paint before I go. At least I have advanced some and hopefully when I come home I can really hit it hard. I think before I do any more petal work I need to find the interior of this peony with all those petals so that comes next! Thank you for being patient with me!

Watercolor Peony

I have been absent along time it seems. Summers can be busy with company and reunions and finally I have one week to begin something. I decided on another peony as they are so popular and sell well. I have to leave again the 28th for 2 weeks so have to leave my husband in charge of hummingbird feeders and dogs. I wish I could take this painting with me and complete it but I have learned not to travel with my work as something always happens to it...even a small scratch could alter the background from being even so I do not take the chance. Hopefully I will be able to get this center area near done so there is not so much to do when I get home again!!
Also I put into print the yellow rose, Once In A Blue Moon. It turned out so nice so I am well pleased with the giclees.

Small Paintings

I have decided to do some smaller fast paintings just to get out of the rut I am in and to have a little fun. One is watercolor on a deep cradle claybord textured and is 6"x8". I really enjoyed it and will show it from the side so you can see the depth and then the front.
The second piece of two swans is acrylic on canvas and is only 5"x7" which is really getting small for me but was alot of fun. You know I love to work full sheet watercolors so I usually am 30"x28" alot of the time so these were a challenge and I do not have alot of small brushes for this sort of thing. I did enjoy them both though and think I will continue to try a few new things every once in awhile just for fun.

I think that at some point I might fiddle with them both a little as I do like detail but my intention initially was to do the painting and not go back in. That will be hard for me but I am not detailing like I usually do so that is good for me.

Yellow Rose Watercolor Complete!

I am calling this done but I know I might tinker with it some more before it goes for the official scan. I had a phone call when the last wash was going in on the top part and it closed in on the moon...I might play with that but I surely do not want to mess it up so we will see.

Those who follow me on Facebook know that I write poetry and writings about Lady Lake and Mr Moon and so when I thought of a dark background for this piece I decided that Mr Moon might look nice back there...however it was scarey and I felt he had to be rather central...which is pushing my luck with composition...but I feel it worked ok. If I can lighten the dark carefully and pull it back some on the moon area I will as that is no longer circular but if I think it might mess things up I will just leave it be. I have not decided what I will start next but I think what ever it is will be very different from my usual just for a change of pace!!!

Once In A Blue Moon-Yellow Rose Watercolor

I have not been spending much time on this lately but today I took the time to darken a few areas and actually if I would spend just a couple more hours I think I could be done. I am done for the most part with everything but the large rose...and that has the center to go in yet and to tune up some edges. The blue on the moon seems to be showing up a little bluer than it is but I have to look at that and see if I might want to actually do that to the painting...we will see! So hopefully soon I will be able to show you the finished piece. Thank you for being patient!

Watercolor of Yellow Rose

I am feeling a little better and decided to try something different with the watercolor of the yellow rose...which is scarey as I was liking the rose very much. I decided to try a moon since I write poetry about Mr Moon so often. I think this is maybe showing up a little more blue than it really is but I left it as I am wondering if another glaze of blue is what I need! The title for this I think is going to be, Once In a Blue Moon...and I hope that I do not ruin it. ha! Some of you know my history of painting while sick. ha!

I am also working on a few outdoor projects and so painting has been taking a back seat. I hope this month to get a few things done and others started as I would like to have some good pieces ready for the spring shows. Now if I can stick to my guns and do it will be another story! ha!
I ended up with a little hard edge on the side of the moon and am unsure about it as of yet. I do not want to mess up what I have but will let it sit and think about how I will soften that area.

Since my trip to Oregon I have been sick with hayfever and pretty run down so to have some good news come my way was so wonderful!
My painting, Papa's Pepper, was juried into the International Guild of Realism show that will be held in Sante Fe, New Mexico at the Sage Creek Gallery. Opening reception will be Sept 30th! This is quite the show and one that I have not been in since I was selected to join. It is a small group they select to hang and so I feel very blessed to be in this show! Maybe I will make it to the opening reception!~

I am back from Chicago and had a wonderful time and now resting so I can go out to my daughters in Oregon and help her for a few days. It seems summer is slipping away from me but I am glad I could meet 10 artist friends in Chicago and now be with my daughter. Life is good!
I just received a link that previews SPLASH 12 that is out now from North Light books. I have a 2 page spread of the green grapes painting. This just shows one page but also shows you some of the other wonderful art in the book. I have always loved these books and know you will too. There is so much to learn from looking at the work of other artists and what they have to say.
While in Chicago I saw this book as mine has not arrived yet and it is really a stunningly beautiful book that you will enjoy!

Yellow Rose Watercolor

I finally got the programs working so here is my first installment on the new painting of a yellow rose. I will be gone now for 2 weeks so will have to paint like crazy when I get back but I am enjoying this painting so it will not be hard to get back into! The trick in stacking colors with yellow is not to make green!! ha! The background is going to be dark so I hope that is going to make the rose sing!

Sorry About Such A Delay!

I have been absent far too long! I am so sorry but life just keeps getting in the way. I was gardening for a week or more trying to weed it well because I was gone so much last year teaching...well then came in and did manage to do some painting and then my computer got a virus...finally got the computer home and they have somehow removed the photo program so now I have to take it back in tomorrow! ha! BUT!!! Tomorrow afternoon I should be able to post where my new painting is at...I have left my son's dog and my daughter's cat for awhile and when things seem more normal around here will finish them off. I did work some on the dog too but will wait for that final post.
I leave June 3rd for Chicago where I will meet 10 artists and we will run with our cameras for 5 days taking pictures of everything we can see! It will be such fun. Then I will be home 10 days and then off to help my daughter at her store in Oregon for a bit...I do not have anything else scheduled until Aug so I should be able to finish the three paintings up and begin the next during that time...YIPEE! I had such grand intentions but I am allowing myself time to play this year which I have not done in a number of years. In fact, I have begun to save papers to begin a collage at some point! Yes you heard me right! AND I might begin plein aire painting and am looking forward to that thought!!! I hope I can as I think that is the perfect thing for summers up here!

L'Art De L'Aquarelle

I am in the new L'Art De L'Aquarelle art magazine from France. It is No 8 and will also become available in the English version at a later date. So obviously I cannot read it to know what it says but I have 6 pages and am in good company in this edition as Mary Whyte, Dean Mitchell and Cheng Khee Chee among others are in this one! I tried to take some straight pictures but could not get it right so gave up. I hope to find the images online and then I will post that for you to see. I have known about this since Oct but it kept being pushed back until now. I had to take pictures in my studio etc and so hired that done but none were used! ha! I am very happy to be in this lovely high gloss magazine! Watch for it at Borders etc, as you might see it there!

Girl With Cat Update

I have not been painting much as it was nice so have been outside doing the gardens but today it is windy and snow! Yes, you heard me right! It is bitter with ice forming on the docks. I am wrapped in a blanket as I type! I just cannot get warm. I thought I would update this painting in case I work on it some today yet. There is not enough info in my pictures to really help me with some of this and so I am just taking it slow. I hope that it will all work out and get done this week so I can move on! I have several drawings going and hope to start one soon if possible!

For those of you following this, my son was home and so he saw the Rotweiler painting below and a tear fell. He said it looked just like her and so I guess that was a success!

Girl with Cat Watercolor

I had hoped to rescue this painting but I fear that is not possible. Remember this was that new Arches Watercolor board and when it is wet it shows a different value...it grays a little and it is very impossible to lift off from without damaging the paper. So because of that I am not sure I will continue any longer as I do not think I can make it look correct at this point...the skin tones are no longer glowing in the shadow under her hair on the right side. I might just tuck this away and do it again some day on real Arches so that I can lift the hair and not paint around it...this has become too much work and perhaps no good results in the end. So I will let it be for awhile and see but it might be something I never complete. That is a first for me! I have always completed every painting started...but this surface was not what I expected at all. However I think for acrylics etc it would be wonderful. Rotweiler Watercolor Portrait Done!

I have been working on a portrait of my son's Rotweiler Taylor who passed away last year. I have been surprised how fast this went. Not sure I am totally satisfied as she did not have much shape.ha! She was almost 150 pounds I believe...solid and like a swollen wood tick with skinny legs. ha! It was hard to give her some shape! But I think it will do for now as I want to move on and can pick away at details later. She was a wonderful dog and I called her my grand-daughter as she was so lovely...gently and loved kittens and small animals. But she also could sink herself in the lake and pick a rock up and bring it to the surface! ha!!! So here she is...I think my son will be surprised when he comes home in a week or so.

Peony Painting Now Licensed!

I have been waiting to show you these...it just took a year for the samples to come out and actually receive a set to see! These are being made by Lifesyles of the UK. It is a large tray and small thin tray, and then small and large placemats and coasters with a cork bottom. They really are nice! But I am not sure they are available in the US! ha!! I guess I have to wait and see. They have a website but this pattern is not up yet it is http://www.life-style.co.uk/ and hopefully I will hear if anyone in the US will handle them.

Rotweiler Watercolor

My sons dog passed away and I decided to try to paint her. Taylor was getting so heavy that she no longer had a shape left but I could not find a picture of when she was younger. She had a harness and would pull my son around in the mountains of South Lake Tahoe while he was on his skateboard...she was quite the girl. I still have to try find a picture that shows her nose better and have to get the eyes done etc...you can see I have a ways to go yet but this is where I am at right now...hopefully I will get this done this week...even with all the Easter prep and choir practice. We will see!

Spring Visitor!

Since I have not been painting much of late I thought I would show you one of my visitors. This female brings twins into the yard every year. I thought it made her special but have since learned that they usually have one fawn on the first birth and twins usually every birth after...this is just what I have heard but she seems to hold true to this. She is a very good mom. During hunting season she will bring her kids into my yard. She seems to know where they will be safe. However, they do eat everything in site. Her twins were not from her when I took this picture of her in my garden...she is pretty calm around me...I just can talk to her and tell her that it is enough and she needs to move on and she will slowly walk away. She however is also the culprit that eats all my daylilies! I have not had a single bloom in years! I am missing my white one and so am going to try to protect it this year so I can get some pictures for painting. Anyway, thought you would enjoy seeing her...she is a gentle soul.

Spring Is Finally Here!

I have not been able to paint it seems because slowly spring is arriving and I just want to be outside! Mr Chippie came out of hibernation last week and from there it has been birds galore arriving. Also yesterday the Osprey is on the nest...the mate has not arrived yet but which ever one it is is arranging and adding more twigs...getting ready. They get so heavy and can actally end up holding water so that in a bad storm they fill and get so heavy they come down...this one is becoming pretty big. I always feel good when I see them both there so hoping any day now the mate will arrive.

Watercolor of Girl and Cat

I have begun this watercolor but it is a real struggle. I was not going to post but decided to do it as it will be a learning experience for us all! This is the new Arches watercolor board. I am finding it gets a gray cast when wet and so very hard to determine the value of the paint you apply and also is really not easy to lift. However it is a nice smooth surface so maybe I can learn to work with it...who knows...another media might have to be added to bring it to completion. So here you go...calling this step one. We will see how it goes!!! I want to keep it a very unified piece with color so hoping to just be very careful about adding anymore to this...we will see!

SPLASH - 13 Book ACCEPTANCE!

I am happy to announce that Monday's Wash was accepted into Splash-13 which is about alternative approaches. Of course when I sent it in to be juried I knew what was alternative about it but a year later I cannot remember that good comment I had! ha! I have to sit down and think because I really had a good thought on this at the time.

At Attention

For now the title of this is "At Attention" as that fits so well on entry forms! ha! This watercolor is done. I have had it photographed and want to move on to something new. I am worried it might be dark...but I have added darks so you might see a change in the coloring some. I am hoping to enter this is Birds In Art. That is a tough show to get into but I want to at least try.
I want to point out here as a teaching thought...the leaves remained more like shapes with little interest in them because I feared they would detract from the house and the bird. It was very tempting to go in and add something to them but I have not and I think that was the right choice. Backgrounds are always hard for me because I do not want to settle for a dark background just because that is easy or a solid one...I am always looking for another solution and because I am so stubborn it will always be my challenge I guess! Ha! Thanks for following me on this through two illnesses!!! Next I will work on a cat with a girl...some would say girl with a cat but I think the cat is going to steal the show if I can pull it off!

At Attention-Sparrow Watercolor

I am really close to done and decided to post it now. I still could refine a few edges but will be sending it off for a scan and that takes awhile so wanted to post it. I am hoping I pulled it off as I was making up this background but it was so much fun I could not stop! I did not want anything with crisp edges but needed it to still read foliage. I am sure I could have done it better with a real photo but sometimes I like to just play and this is one of those. Hopefully the sparrow still stands out enough. I liked the attention sign, although it was for dogs...I made it into something perhaps about birds or nesting...who knows...but thought the arrow helped tell a story.
I will be teaching a workshop here in Bemidji the 10th -12th so have to begin preparing for that but I do have a drawing nearly complete so hopefully I will be able to post something on that before too long! Any questions...just ask!

Finishing Up Watercolor of Blue Heron

Since I have no energy I was looking around the studio straightening out a little and found the Blue Heron I did for the Oil Spill to be put on tshirts. I did not need to complete the body as I did the lines in box form around the heron to make it more graphic and then sort of set it aside. I decided to finish it so it can be a new image on cards this summer. It did not even take an hour to complete but it feels great to get something done that I can use during tourist season! So it might not be much guys but it is at least a sign I am moving forward, albeit rather slowly! I have another Dr.'s appt on Tuesday for some tests so we will see what I learn then.

Sickness Prevails.

I am sorry this is taking so long but after having a bad cold for 3 weeks I was feeling better and went to help my daughter and now I am very sick. Tomorrow I will see a Dr and try to get something for this. Those of you who have known me over the years know I often paint through sickness but make mistakes or spill things on my painting so this time I walked away from it for fear I would ruin it. I am hoping in a few days with meds I will again be able to paint and bring this one to conclusion...keep me in your thoughts...I will try to get this done soon! Thanks for sticking with me!

Sparrow Watercolor Demo

Well I am finally closing the gap in painting the sparrow on the birdhouse. There still is so much to do but I believe the next phase will finish it so thought I should post. I still am trying to solve a few problems but believe the repetitive arrows bring the eye up to the bird nicely. The repetitive leaf shapes are working well and I am trying not to put any detail in them so that they are not too distracting. I have a headache from working on the bird feathers this afternoon so will stop for now. I still need to work with alot of the upper leaves but want them to be softer and the bird is not done yet but close...I hope I will love it when I am done because when you put so much time into them you want to like them! ha! This watercolor is 22" x 16 1/2" and is all transparent watercolor. I am sorry it is slightly crooked but I think you still get the idea.

Well, I decided to stick this up as maybe I will figure things out faster and then it will be done before you know it! ha! So before that happens I thought you would like to see what I am trying to decide. I again started at the bottom on the left side to bring in more make believe plants because I know that will work find there. What I am trying to do is close the gap on the area that I find could make or break the piece. Now if I were good at photoshop I would just try this out there but I do not know how to do that...so this is what I do...by looking at this area with everything around it I am coming to the conclusion that to bring in a blue sky might not be the best idea. I am thinking of just continuing into light greens...so that I do not bring in a new element to deal with...as I want the focus to remain on the bird and the house...so I think there has to remain a sameness to the background...no surprises back there to distract. A blue sky could draw the eye up and away so I will go slowly into this so that I can still change my mind but thought you might want to see what I am thinking. Remember, I do print these big and trust that no one is copying my work...it is copyrighted so be aware of that. By being larger you can more easily see what I am actually doing. So here is "Manzanita Resident" at this point.

Sparrow WIP

Slowly ever so slowly I am moving along on my watercolor of the sparrow and birdhouse. I hit a wall when I decided that I wanted to change my background. I had to really think about what I wanted and ended up making up this plant that sort of has a bamboo feel to it but think it gives some nice negative shapes because of the horizontal and vertical shapes. I will have alot of work ahead of me because I am not going for the values yet but rather just developing the shapes. Once I am happy with them I can darken etc...and also cast some areas back into shadow if that will help move the birdhouse forward. At least you can see I am finally moving forward with this and I sure hope it is the right decision. I am sorry it is now showing the white as true but I felt I needed to capture the picture regardless of the weather.

Deer in my Yard!

This small deer has been coming into our yard and has now found the birdseed right outside the window where I sit at the computer in my studio. I had to crawl out but my husband was able to get to his camera and shoot this. It is not perfect as the window frame gets in the way some but this is my little buddy! Thought you would enjoy seeing him!

Manzanita Resident Watercolor

I thought I better post where I am because we have sunshine and we could lose that for the week! It is so bright out and the reflections off the snow are so blinding I did lose some color but this will give you an idea where I am at. At this point I am doing the unthinkable. I thought I would just have the bushes behind like planned but now I keep having visions of white dahlias and not sure I should do that but will have to at least consider it. I hate to change my mind as often I find it might not be as good...because you are altering things. I like a plan and sticking with it. I will complete the sparrow and then have a good look at this. The house is not done either but I like to add the darkest darks once I see how everything else looks. Hopefully by next weekend we will be alot closer to done when I post this watercolor. I took this picture in Manzanita, Oregon and have been calling it Manzanita Resident but not sure that will remain the title. Any thoughts? Thanks for peeking!

Birdhouse Watercolor

Happy New Year to everyone! I am doing my typical winter thing by being sick, having back problems etc...seeems to be my routine every winter! So I have been working more slowly but I am getting excited about this piece!
I believe I will be calling it Manzanita Resident or something like that. It is a weathered birdhouse with a sparrow on top. I have drawn most everything now except the background which I think will be just leaves but have had a few other thoughts so have left it open.
Right now I am just finding shapes for the most part. I have started some of the weathered paint and a couple of feathers but I like to find a little of everything before I continue on...I thought before I go any further you would like to see my project. I hope those of you who have been copying my work will realize that this is my copyright and that you should not be copying other peoples work. It is illegal. I am seeing knock offs of my work and I suspect I post these way too big for people to see how easy it would be to copy...but I am trusting you to be honest. If not then I will have to take other measures...so please be honest and do not copy what is not yours. Sorry but a few can ruin it for the many I guess.

Winter White Peony

I darkened a few more area on the peony leaves but now we have very bright light outside and I think it just killed it...maybe we will see a difference. I am hoping to get this scanned next week and then it might be more accurate. I have signed it and want to close this chapter and move on...the next drawing is progressing and I will post that next week hopefully!

Painting white flowers is always odd because do you chose grays or what to shadow with...but if your values are right it doesn't matter, as it will still appear as a white flower. I seem to prefer a blue/gray color for this most of the time. It feels believeable but gives some life to the flower more than a gray would but I have done a mixed gray and it has been lovely too. So don't fear the white flowers as they can be alot of fun!

This white peony might not be done so I still have not signed it but thought while there was a lighter sky I would get the shot for you. We have so many gray days it is hard to get a good picture so took my opportunity!
I struggled with the background as it was an old piece of Strathmore and it reacted differently, making my wash in the background get very granulated. I was not sure I liked that and then while I was sick I started to diddle with it which is never the thing to do. I should have left it alone but so it goes. I never learn my lesson to not paint when I am sick! ha! Many of you have seen the mistakes I have made over the years while sick!
Hopefully all that is left is to clean up a few edges but will take my time tomorrow looking it over to make sure.

Jane Freeman Workshop

As you know I had to withdraw from teaching nationally for awhile but a friend wrote a grant and got it for me so I will teach a class here with reduced cost to the students! They pay $100 for the workshop and I still get paid my normal amount so this will be great!
I will be teaching a workshop here in Bemidji, Minnesota! I have stopped teaching nationally for awhile due to personal reasons but will begin doing a few locally until I can travel again.

The dates are March 10, 11 and 12, 2011 and again on 4/2/2011. The cost is $100 because we have a grant to cover the rest! So it is a big savings. Time is 9 am to 3 pm each day.

New Little Friend

A few weeks ago this small bird showed up here and it was -20 below...he was fluffed out and having trouble with his beak. It was freezing...he was not eating well and did not belong in northern Minnesota at this time of year. I did not see him again and assumed he had died.
This afternoon he reappeared! I cannot believe it...his feet are not too good and still he is not eating very well...he doesnt like what I have...that part I feel bad about...I did not get any fat out for him which is what he needs...but it would scare him now. I waited until he flew and put up a house for him and he came back and has used it! If he flies again I will get the suet down from the tree for him as well. I have been crying as I really am so grateful he came back, is alive and is using the house...hopefully I can help him stay alive.
I also have tried to paint a little...I have been sick and not getting much done but if i could just feel better I think it could be finished very quickly...i will keep you posted!

White Peony demo

The sun is shining so I wanted to grab a picture of my white peony watercolor painting. I have only been working on the left side but now that flower seems to make sense. I will come back to the right side again but with all the choir practices and a two day art show I am not thinking I will get to paint until the weekend. But at least you are caught up to where I am in the painting. The background still needs to be resolved as well but sometimes for me it helps to know what values I will have in the foreground of my painting to better understand what is needed behind the flower. I am thinking the stems will be darker than the background for something different as so many watercolor paintings just resolve this with a dark background. There is always another solution to a watercolor I think. We will see how it develops!! I took the picture in some pretty strong sunlight so I am afraid the greens might appear a little faded here. But you can at least see where I am headed! I will update the peony demo next week when I am done with all that I am doing.

Hello!!!

My computer had to go in for a little Dr appt..and finally got it back. Just before it went down I had taken a picture of my new piece I am working on but could not get at it. So here is my new peony painting a week ago. I have since done some work but now there has been constant gray days and snow storms so no new pics yet. I will try to get that as soon as things improve!
I am trying to find my shapes here and also I decided to make it more blue in the shadows. So these white peonies are with a blue cast which I hope will be pretty. I mixed that with Quin. Rose and Phthalo Turquoise..and a dab of New Gamboge as well. Just remember your triad can make a nice gray no matter which ones you use as long as they are not color mixes. In this case, the turquoise already has yellow in it so I did not need much.
This is a very busy week for me with Christmas coming! I have an art show on Friday and Saturday but before I can do that I have a book signing on Thurs and Wed I will be singing with the choir at the nursing homes in town and practicing for the Christmas concert...so my days are full! If I do not paint I will at least try to get the next picture to update you.

Final?

I still have to check this totally for edges but I believe it is done or nearly done. I am going to post it as it is and also a cropped version as sometimes when I view it online it is so much easier to see what needs to be done.
The struggle [well one of them] has been the fact that in the foregroud the snowbank is chunky...it is after the snowplow has gone through and then behind is smooth. The chunks were catching all this light and were transparent up on the top edges but when I did it that way it appeared wrong or imagined so now I have blended that out a bit. Sometimes reality is not what makes the best painting! ha! That holds true for a picture as well. I wonderful photo doesn't always make a wonderful painting.
Anyway, this is how it is at this point and the title is Idlewild Morning...but in reality this is late afternoon so I might have to change that...but the first sounds better. We will see what I do with that too! So here you go...two views...cropped and as is. If this thing will begin working it would help! ha!

Painting Update!

I am moving pretty slowly on this but I just do not paint alot...but slowly it is moving forward and I think I am beginning to see some progress and perhaps the end by the weekend! This is an area on my point that I have walked through since 1972 and always thought it should be painted...so it is about time! I thought at the time the snow line at the bottom was fun as the plow had come through and the sun was outlining all the clumps but now I am not sure it appears to fit in...we will see in the end...if it looks better I will crop it I guess...anyway, here is where I am today!

Snow UPDATE

Well I am not breaking any records here but I do not feel up to painting but make myself try to do even an inch a day if I can. So it is not ripping along but it is getting there. I will not be very pleased with it I am sure but it is a beginning. I love landscapes but never do them and want to do them my way...so it will be hard to keep at it and try to develop something but I plan to do just that through the winter. Hopefully by spring I will be more comfortable with this!

Not Sure About This One!

I have never done a landscape or a snowscene in watercolor but here it goes! I have decided the time has come to play...loosen up a tad and try something new...I am sure attempt number two will be better but thought I would show you where I am at on this and let you follow me as I struggle with it! ha! I am sorry it is showing so much yellow but my home is all knotty pine...ceilings and walls so that is why I have to take my pictures outside but today is raining and 40 mph winds...so hopefully the next update will be more true if I can get outside. This is by no means going to be a great painting but I figured we could all watch the process together! You can cheer me on when I am ready to throw it out the window! There still is a little masking in a few places that you might see...and hopefully my next installment will look better...and be a nicer painting too! ha!!

Workshops

Today I made a decision to not teach anymore. I have written to all the workshop groups through 2012 and pulled my name. My health has been going down and I just had to make a call. My Drs said to remove stress to try help things so this was my first step. It is not easy as I have worked very hard to get to this point but I feel I had very little choice. I do not want to teach and not be able to give it my all. I just wanted you to know what was going on. I still will do the blog and I hope to continue to paint every day. But I will also now find time to take breaks and take care of myself. I know when one door closes another opens and I will prepare myself for what that next thing might be. Who knows...I just need to keep a positive attitude. Thanks for listening.

Loon Rescue

Getting ready to start Loon Rescue most likely sometime next week! I have done the image and might offer it both ways to see which one people like...but thought I would show you first and see which you seem to like best! I think having the graphics around the image helps it become more of a tshirt design...that is my opinion...and it goes with the heron I did with the Oil Spill.

Workshop Demo

This fall I attended a workshop in Page, AZ with three other painting friends. It was by David Drummond and we went to see how he paints his signature water. It was great fun and you saw the pictures of where we went rafting etc down the Colorado...but I had not posted the demo we did in class. Mine is not done as I chose to walk with him as he problem solved for each student which was very interesting. I think these dramatic wave reflections are really his signature style and so recognizable as his so that one would not be tempted to really do them in a painting. Besides you would need large rocks to work for this as if I would put such large dramatic reflections under the loon for instance, it would be over kill! But since I never get to go take classes this was great fun and I hope to do more of this as it just is so fun to be a student and not the teacher! ha~

Loon Rescue tshirt

I am working on a design for loon rescue to put on tshirts and boy have I had troubles! I thought I just wanted the image...but then added more water and then felt I should mask the entire loon in order to get the washes on the water right...well I lifted the mask and lost most of the color! Dear Phyllis who reads my posts mentioned there are some masks that do not lift the color but since I use so much transparent paints who knows if anything would have worked. I just went about this backwards. I will post what happened and you will see how the colors went from black to gray...and then I reworked it but now am having troubles with the horizon line from some bleeding in trying to do all that fixing. I really do not want to remask the wings and start over again but will see...so will post how bad it was when the mask was removed...and where I have it back to now...and then hopefully in a few days or less I can show you the final image...gotta think how to do it! I like images for tshirts to be more graphic so that is the next step! Hopefully it will be done soon and I can move on! I just returned from Page last night. I only had a few days at home after teaching in Calgary, Alberta so I was exhausted but this was a dream trip and nothing could stop me! I met several of my friends there and we had a wonderful time. I do really believe I will return there to paint again as this was a stunning place. I actually had no idea that this was where people started alot of the rafting trips we so often hear about. I rafted for 3 1/2 hours on calm deep rivers...where I got out you could start the rapids and go for 14 days!!! I highly recommend this to anyone who loves landscapes. I took 350 pictures on this river and I could do it again and take just as many I am sure! I am posting one to show you from above a boat in the water below to give you some scale of what we rafted through.

Book Review

I just noticed that when you go to amazon.com to find my book, "A Celebration of Light" that it is now the soft cover and the book reviews were not carried over from the hard cover so it has none! Where Has Summer Gone!?!

I see how few posts I have made and wonder where did the summer go? But I also look forward to fall because that is when things will slow here and I can begin the drawings for painting this winter. I have so many in my head I am not sure where to begin! This is the first time I have not painted for an entire summer...painted for me I mean. I have done demos and step by steps for demos but nothing creative for me...I know I need to do that so I will return home the second week of October and I will draw until I have several ready to go and plunge in with gusto!!! My soul needs it for sure. I enjoy teaching but it leaves no time for me to paint for me...and that is not really so good I fear...but for now that is how it is and I am glad to have 2 weeks at home right now before Calgary...it will the the longest I have been home all summer...I need it to refuel as I am feeling very run down and tired...so anyway...I hope to begin posting more regular once life slows and I find my brains that I must have packed in a spare suitcase! ha!
I have the heron I designed for the tshirts for the Gulf and was informed last week that it is still the top selling design. For those of you unfamiliar with this, artists from around the world did images that were placed on tshirts etc for sale and 100% of the profits go to cleaning birds in the Gulf. Paul Jackson workshop

I finished teaching another workshop and was home for 2 days in time to meet Paul Jackson and his wife Marla here and they taught a 3 day workshop which I attended. It was alot of fun and being a student again was so different! ha! I enjoyed them so much and I believe everyone wants them to come back next year! Stanley Maltzman

I have not had much time this summer to keep this up as I have been traveling so much. But I wanted to tell you about the highlight of my Bend, Oregon workshop! The other instructor was Stanley Maltzman and I believe his book is one of the first I purchased way back when. He is 89 and still travels and teaches and you would be amazed at his energy! He is delightful and charming and talented...what a combo!!! I think if you are a plein air artist and like pastels, you will enjoy his workshops tremendously! I was honored to be there with him and able to chat each morning for a few minutes during breakfast...he was a true inspiration!

The Artistic Touch 4 Book

I'm Back!

I am back but right before leaving my computer had a virus and it is still in the shop...so I cannot post any pictures for you for awhile. It was a terrific workshop with the nicest bunch of ladies ever. I wish I could have had another day really! When I can I will post how far I got with my painting and they with their's and show you how it went.
I leave on Tuesday of next week until Sunday as I have a show at a gallery in Stillwater, MN and so hopefully when I arrive back I will have my computer up and can post pictures from there as well!!! Thanks for hanging in there with me!!! Take care!

Off To Bend!

Leaving in the morning for Bend...hoping the weather holds as they are calling for severe thunderstorms! Yikes! I will just pray they all go somewhere else as I have to arrive! I will post when I get back how the paintings turned out and fill you in on the rest of what is planned for August...something every week through that month and then off to Calgary in Sept to teach! Bend, Oregon workshop

I thought I would show the demo I am working on for the workshop in Bend at Art in the Mountians. This is what everyone can work on if they like or they can work on their own painting. I still have alot of darks and more details to do but this is where I will leave it and finish there the last day.
It seem seems summer is slipping away from me. I think I packed too much into these few months and now I am not home enough to enjoy the summer...we will see how it all plays out.

I will have a show in the beginning of August in Stillwater, Minnesota so have to begin getting that ready too as it will be on top of me when I return from Oregon!! I guess this pace is keeping me out of trouble! ha!!! Have a great day everyone!

I Am Home!

I returned last Monday but have been so tired that I have done very little. Mostly got the gardens back in order and washed clothes! Seems when I am gone nothing gets done...but of course it does...it is just my things that build up! ha!
I went to Oklahoma to visit my sister and be with her for her 75th birthday! That was terrific and I enjoyed it alot but could do without that heat! Then from there I went to Wichita for a private workshop with Hugh Greer. Hugh and his sweet wife Terry have been online friends for maybe 10 years! So when he offered me to come I jumped and ran...straight to Kansas! Ha! It was a wonderful 3 days and I learned so much. He works in acrylics and is a retired architect so his landscapes are something he has done since the 60's. He does amazing work and to see it in person was overwhelming at times! I even cried! Just beautiful. I am hoping to start working in acrylics and doing landscapes more this winter. I am posting the last days work but remember it is only 1/2 done. I am not sure it will ever be completed but it will help me when I start again later this year. Unfortunately you cannot see all the wonderful details online and let me assure you in person it is overwhelming!
Now I have to keep my nose to the grindstone as I teach in Bend, Oregon at Art in the Mountains in mid July so have to finish up the demos and get things shipped ahead to be there when I arrive! Pressure is on. You might not hear from me for awhile but I will be thinking of all of you and will be anxious to get back and report in!!!

This painting I am posting is 1/2 done with alot of grasses yet to do and details on the barn etc...the sky needs to become darker at the top and more detail in the trees but this will give you an idea of what I have been doing and the direction I would like to eventually move!!!

Gulf Oil Spill

I have been trying to get a good photo of my piece for tshirts and think I have it but not ready to post yet...if it is ready before I go to bed I will post it for you. Working on Oil Spill

I am working on a design to use on t-shirts that will be sold at a Zazzle store with the profits going to a group for washing birds...all of that is in the works now but thought I would post where my design is so far...hopefully I can pull this together by tomorrow. My daughter arrives Monday with her husband for a week and then I am gone for 10 days...when I return I will have to finish up the demos and get everything packed for Art in the Mountains...I am looking forward to giving this workshop!!!

Demos

I have been working on my demo for Bend, Oregon and it is very hard to stay in my chair and actually do it because we have had such lovely weather! It is driving me nuts! Ha! After such a long winter it is just impossible to look out the window and be content for now...but I hear there is rain by Thurs and so I can maybe get alot done then! Just wanted you to know I have been here but just nothing to post...
My painting Mondays Wash arrived for the Transparent Watercolor Society of America show and is hung so I am excited about that. Always nice to have recognition for something you work so hard on.
If anyone is still interested in Bend, Oregon, there still are a few openings. I am traveling there a bit early to take in the sites and get info for future paintings so I am excited!!!

I need to velcro my butt to the studio chair as I am having trouble staying there! It is just beautiful out and after a long winter and being inside so much it is hard not to be out in it! I have been out since 5:30am and I need to come in.
I have been working on the demo for Bend, Oregon where I will teach at Art in the Mountains. This will be the demo for Calgary, Alberta as well...I think it will be a difficult but fun piece for everyone.
So here is the lake! And why I just had to be outside!!!

A Pearfect Day

I wanted to post the final on this painting so you can see where I left it. Not sure if this is the title but it will do for now. I really had to force myself to consider a very simple background and something other than dark which is such a common solution. This sea/sky seems to lend some atmosphere but I think had I added clouds it might have been detracting...so hard to know...maybe I would have loved it! But hopefully this idea will begin to evolve for me. This is a nearly full sheet. I am really liking combining a still life with a landscape...I just have to get better at it!

Framing!

I am off to the framers today and did get the pro photo shoot of my last painting with pears. So will get that framed as well. When I get back on Friday I can do the color correction etc and will try to post that last painting. I say last even though there are those 2 out there but I am so sick of pears! Ha! One I wrecked the background last minute and the other is about 1/4 or so done...and I think I will work on it off and on and think about the background on that one and take photos to try something...being more careful with it than the other one! Ha! So I will be checking in soon with an update!

Slow Progress

I actually have not been painting for some time now. I think I burned out! Plus so much has been going on here which made it hard for me to paint. I learned not to paint when life is in turmoil when I wrecked the background on that last piece so I am laying low until life settles.

I have been out taking photos however...out of the house and breathing air and trying to keep my health going strong! Took this lovely picture of swans down by my bridge and I hope to go up to the rice patties north of me where they grow wild rice. In a few weeks that should begin to fill with thousands of swans. It is deafening and hopefully when they arrive I can get there and take pictures to share with you!

Pears On Vacation

This is maybe not the title but that is what I am calling it right now. It is not done and I am trying to go more slowly because of the other disaster! That was terrible! But I am trying so many new things something is bound to go wrong. This time the tape worked and the masking quite well too...no crazy moves on my part...so it is ok so far!

I had thought there might be trees somewhere on the horizon and now I dont think I want that so now I fear the painting is cut in 1/2 with the waterline...so not sure how this will all be fixed...hopefully over the weekend I will have this one finished as well!

Four Pears

Ok gang...still experimenting here and this time I have really gone a stretch...there is still so much to do but before I go any further you can see the direction I am trying to go. The blue is not showing up right here...but this is more about the idea than the color at this point anyway. I can see where doing all of these paintings up to a point is allowing me to experiment without feeling like I am losing too much...so it has been a worthwhile test. I think today I am done as I am wore out...I am going outside my comfort zone with mostly my imagination on this...small references to use but thinking I want to just investigate possible backgrounds...if I like this...you can bet this summer I will be taking pictures!!! So here is Four Pears on Movil Lake. I am sorry I am keeping this so small but images are being lifted again so it is what I have to do from now on.

I was just notified that the painting, "Monday's Wash" has been juried into the 2010 Transparent Watercolor Society of America's national exhibition. I am tickled as I love this piece and was hoping it would do well! The exhibit runs from May 1 to July 25th at the Kenosha Public Museum in Kenosha, WI near Chicago so if you are in the area, this is a terrific show to see!!!

In the Bag and New Update

This is my final photo...I still have to have a professional do this so it is right. Still not sure about "In the Bag" but it will be that until the name comes to me that is better. I got the bar code in on the lower right pear which was fun.

This painting is only getting the wood treatment right now...but that is coming along ok...This might be a slow one and be the last one finished as some elements are pretty complicated...but we will see.

I am not done but will show you where I am at and tonight or in the morning I will finish it and post the final right here with this one I think...unless there is more I want to say.
I have to redefine some of the openings between the boards which I have begun, clean some edges and check a few values in areas. I hope that I can feel ok about this one and move on to number three of the pears.
Trying a landscape in the background was nerve wracking especially since I do not do them and then I chose to do autum to keep the coloring the same through out the picture. When we have those clear days each tree is so clearly defined that it was not an option to do them softly blurred. Also that would have appeared almost like a different painting in the background. I do like the idea so now with that in mind I will be taking pictures of things that might be possible backdrops for other still life works...I think it is one way to solve that problem of the background without resorting to dark....or nothing...those are too simple of solutions. So this test has shown me a few ideas I think...and I used an old brush with jagged edges to just drag the wood grain in...it took about 15 minutes! So that was fun and using this tape for edges was new...also the masking for me is something I rarely have used so am trying to get use to it. It does have some draw backs...but more practice might help.

In The Bag Today

This is where I am at 3pm...I started at 9am. I cannot believe it is going so slowly but guess there has been alot of thinking to figure out these reflections. I think by tomorrow I will be closing the gap and that will feel wonderful as I am itching to work on the next one. The tape I am using is Painters Precision tape that is bright green...new and found it at ACE Hardware. It is working very very well!
